Philip Cross Economics was founded in 2012. After 36 years at Statistics Canada, the last few as its Chief Economic Analyst, I decided to start my own company. Its primary product is consulting with government departments or business firms on macroeconomic topics, giving speeches on the economy and statistics, and interviews with the media about trends in the economy and developments at Statistics Canada.
Since leaving government, I worked for a year as Research Co-ordinator at the Macdonald-Laurier Institute. I work now on a free-lance basis with various think-tanks and universities across the country, and published a leading indicator for Bloomberg. I am also on the Business Cycle dating Committee at the C.D. Howe Institute. I received the Queen's Jubilee Medal in 2012.
I have no affiliation with any organization other than as a researcher at a number of research institutes. I have no political affiliation, nor an ideological stance beyond a belief founded on 36 years of observing the economy that market forces determine long-run outcomes. I believe economics is not a doctrine, but a mode of inquiry into what works. The emphasis is the underlying trend of business conditions, which is what most firms and investors need to know. Rather than analyzing every sector every month, the focus is on those sectors which have the most impact on macroeconomic trends.
I have written extensively on a number of subjects, with a selection of these articles grouped under the following six categories: business cycles and macroeconomics; natural resources; pensions; labour markets; business investment; and governance. Most of these articles are available on-line at the web sites of the organization that published them.
I have appeared on BNN, the BBC, The Exchange (CBC), Powerplay (CTV), Power and Politics and The Agenda (TVO), and been interviewed on Sunday Morning, The 180 and Sirius XM. Besides my regular biweekly oped in the Financial Post, I have written opeds for The Globe and Mail, The Wall Street Journal, La Presse, The Hill Times, the Toronto Star, and in the American magazine National Review. I have been interviewed by newspapers across Canada as well as by The Economist, The New York Times, The Daily Telegraph (UK), The Washington Post, Maclean's, Les Affaires, Money Sense, Huff Post, The Hill Times, Canadian Business, and Bloomberg.
I have been a guest lecturer at McGill, Carleton, the University of Calgary, and the Royal Military College. I was invited to speak to the Ottawa Economics Association, the Manning Networking Conference, the Broadbent Institute, the Canadian Taxpayer's Federation, the launch of BC Resource Works, Lancaster House, a CERC symposium, the Ottawa branch of Chartered Financial Analysts, and to debate former Bank of Canada Governor Stephen Poloz at the Rotman School of Management.
I have published short articles in Public Sector Digest, Policy Options, How Ottawa Spends, C2C, The Hub.
I have testified numerous times to House of Commons and Senate Standing Committees, notably Finance and Natural Resources.
